The Guidance Department provides educational and vocational counseling to all students in the high school. Over the course of the four years in high school, students and counselors will meet individually and in groups to address academic, social and career options. The primary focus of the counseling program is to help students identify their strengths, needs, interests and abilities. Through this ongoing developmental process students will effectively learn to define their personal goals and achieve greater
self-awareness.
As liaisons among faculty, students and parents, the guidance counselors help to provide a framework for career exploration that fosters self-direction, personal motivation and incentive to achieve well in all aspects of life. Career exploration and appropriate grade level testing span the course of the four years a student attends Northern Valley Regional High School.
The counselors act as liaisons and resources for students and parents so that each student has opportunities to identify personal options. Helping students to reach their potential is the ultimate goal of the guidance program. Student Assistance Counselors provide on-going support and individual counseling as needed to all students.
Important Note about Final Transcripts
We are excited for our graduating seniors who are heading off to college and we have enjoyed working with them over the past four years. For us to send final transcripts to the appropriate colleges seniors must have indicated the name of their attending school in Naviance. This was completed through the ëgraduation surveyí completed in May.
Transcripts for ëeDocsí schools ñ those participating in electronic transmission of transcripts and materials ñ require that students have indicated in Naviance where they plan to attend. Students are not required to provide an envelope for these schools.
Transcripts for all ëpostage stampí schools ñ those who accept only paper versions of transcripts and materials ñ require that a student submit a stamped legal sized envelope addressed to the proper recipient at the college.
It is expected that all transcripts will be sent by July 12, 2013.
Colleges and Universities typically send requests to both students and our offices requesting transcripts. Keep in mind that there may be delays between the time the eDocs transmits the material and the time college admissions and registrar offices process the final transcript.
If you have any questions please reach out to our office.

Resources - Helping Children in the Aftermath of School Violence
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) - helping children through times of crisis and stress:
- Try and keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.
- Limit exposure to television and the news.
- Be honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.
- Listen to kids' fears and concerns.
- Reassure kids that the world is a good place to be, but sometimes bad things happen.
- Parents and adults need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress.
- Rebuild and reaffirm attachments and relationships.
