DEMAREST SENIOR SERVICE

Deciding where you might like to volunteer for Senior Service is just part of the program. You must continue to maintain your grades throughout senior year.  The organization at which you want to volunteer your time must be willing to take you.  Your proposed project must be approved as a service to the community by the high school.  During the weeks of your participation, you will be required to maintain a journal, documenting your contributions to the community.  You will also be required to attend weekly meetings at school in the evening.  Remember Senior Service is a privilege.

SENIOR SERVICE - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1.  When does the Senior Service application process begin?
The application process begins by the last week in March.  However, it is not too early to plan your Senior Service community service assignment.  Consider volunteering for your local hospital, temple, church, municipality, etc.  Begin to make contacts within the next few months.  Do not wait until March 31; you may not be able to obtain the position you want.

Q2.  When does Senior Service volunteering begin?  What does it involve?
Senior Service typically begins a few days after the last Advanced Placement exam is administered, sometime in mid-May.  You will be required to attend weekly meetings(at night) at Demarest during Senior Service.  You must maintain a log or journal which will be collected.  All Senior Service volunteering must be pre-approved and its validity will be carefully reviewed.  This is a community service program and must be taken seriously.

Q3. How do absences, lateness, and suspensio to school affect eligibility?
Senior Service participants may have no more than:

10 days unexcused absences in any class (a tardy of 15 minutes is considered an absence)

10 unexcused tardies to school

Anyone suspended from school for any reason during the school year will be ineligible for senior service

Q4.  What are the GPA requirements for participation in Senior Service?
Participants must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher after the second marking period of senior year.  The GPA for third marking period of senior year must be 3.0 or higher.

Q5.  What are the requirements for participation in Senior Service if a student is in a half year class for the spring semester?
You are required to attend half year (one-semester) classes even after Senior Service has begun.  However, if a student is enrolled in two, one-semester courses, he/she must continue going to one of them.   The student will not be required to go to the second one, but he or she is obligated to fulfill all course requirements.

Q6.  Are Senior Service participants required to hand in long term assignments, assigned before Senior Service has begun?
Any course requirement assigned early in the course, such as a research paper, will still be mandatory for students to complete even if the student is in Senior Service.

Q7.  How many hours must you volunteer per day/week.
You must volunteer at least 5 hours per day - 25 hours per week.

Q8.  How many absences are permitted?
You are allowed only one absence.   If you are absent more that one day, you will be required to return to school and make up all work in all your classes.

* THERE WILL BE NO DIVERSION FROM THE REQUIREMENTS
